A weekend
in Amish Country.

A Saturday around the ridge fills itself if you let it. Here's how we'd spend one, from a slow breakfast to supper back at the inn.

Morning, up Wheat Ridge Road

Start with breakfast in the Dining House, then point the car up Wheat Ridge Road. Our friends at Miller's keep a bakery, a bulk-food store, and a furniture shop under separate roofs, and it's worth an hour on its own. Bring a cooler if you mean to carry home cheese and pie. Along the same back roads you'll pass family greenhouses, saddleries, and produce stands. Share the road gently with the horse-drawn buggies, and know that Sunday is a day of rest for many families here, so plan your shopping for Saturday.

Midday, ancient ground

From there it's an easy drive to the earthworks. Serpent Mound is the one everyone knows, a quarter-mile effigy you can walk the length of, and Seip Earthworks and Fort Hill are close enough to add if the day is long and the weather's good. If you'd rather be in the woods, the Edge of Appalachia preserves and Davis Memorial have some of the finest trails in the state.

Afternoon, the small stuff

Save some time for the small stuff. The antique shops around Peebles reward an unhurried browse, and there's no shame in an afternoon that's mostly gravel roads and open windows.

Evening, back on the ridge

Come back for supper. Dinner in the Dining House is by reservation, three courses built on what's in season, and you don't have to be staying with us to join. Then it's the fire pit, the porch, and the quiet. That's the weekend.

Ask us at check-in and we'll mark up a map for you.
